As 750,000 visitors are expected to fill Seattle for the 2026 World Cup games, airport and hospitality workers are advocating for better working conditions, including health insurance and higher wages.
Multimedia Journalist Jaelynn Grisso has more.
In early April, employees of contractors at SeaTac marched to deliver a letter of demands to the Port of Seattle leadership.
Top among their demands is for employees of airport contractors to receive health care.
According to union officials, more than 50% of workers employed by airport contractors do not have access to affordable health insurance.
It is such a shame that we are working without health care.
I don't have health care myself.
Employees for contractors make up the majority of airport workers.
Port officials said that of the more than 22,000 employees, only 1,200 are employed by the Port itself.
Representatives from the Port of Seattle pointed to a study started in late 2024, and provided this statement from the commission's president: "The Port is actively working with labor and business partners toward a policy that ensures every worker has access to affordable, quality health care, and we anticipate taking action in the coming year."
Some hospitality workers are similarly fighting for health care and better working conditions.
The Embassy Suites by Hilton neighbors Lumen Field.
Workers there are in negotiation for their contract.
The employees are asking for reduced workloads for housekeepers, year- round health insurance coverage and higher wages.
Representatives for Hilton did not respond by press time.
Next time we'll look at the city's influx of new art thanks to the World Cup.
I'm Paris Jackson.
